Showmen not ‘travellers’

IN response to a letter printed in the Guardian regarding the Saxons Lane travellers’ site, I feel I must respond to put the record straight.
I didn’t think there was any controversy years ago when showmen occupied the fairground in Brook Street, Northwich, as the land was owned by a show lady, Mrs Collins.
After her death, she left it in her will to St. Wilfrid’s Church, and the showmen were relocated to Greenbank. The reason why so few were occupying the site was that it was mainly a bog and unsuitable. Also I believe some local residents were throwing stones at the occupants.
My family and I had to move out of Northwich which had been our home for four generations.
We fought hard to stay in Brook Street, to keep our roots, and a local resident and very dear friend of ours even raised a petition to try and keep us on that site, but all to no avail.
The point I am raising is that the land was owned by a show lady for the use of showmen. Until she died everything was fine, we all travelled around in the summer months and took jobs in the town in the winter.
But ‘travellers’ are not showmen and do cause trouble and mess in areas, we are hoping they do not occupy the sites mentioned on New Road and Bradford Road as we should not all be classed as the same, just because we live in mobile homes.

Gypsys are not showmen and the site the showmen are on WAS for Gypsys and Travellers and was taken of them so the showmen had somewhere to live.
Now they dont All leave rubbish as you said.
some showmen are conmen and some showmen take advanage of the young drunk girls at the fair.
Now i said SOME showmen not all.
ps most of the old showmen came from Gypsies as did Mrs Collins Family and most of the so called showmen now were the workmem of the proper showmen. So please do not think decent Gypsies and Travellers would want to be associated with showmen.
