WHARTON Library will soon be no more after demolition work got under way last week.

The 40-year-old building will be replaced by a new state-of-the-art community library featuring an ICT suite, social area, large community hall, meeting room and interview room.

The new library, expected to open in June 2009, will be built on the site of the old library and neighbouring Willow Wood Community Centre.

Winsford North and East county councillor Tony Hooton, chairman of the Working on Wharton interim steering group said: “I am delighted that all the hard work of the past two years has paid off.

“The building will be a big asset to the community and I would like to thank library staff for the contribution they have made in getting the funding together.”

Vale Royal Borough councillor John Grimshaw, lead councillor for recreation, rural and culture added: “This is great for the people of Wharton.

“The new facility will be far more accessible for people of any age and ability, and a welcome addition to the area.”

The funding package includes a grant of £1.4million from the Big Lottery, £135,000 from Cheshire County Council and £60,000 from Vale Royal Borough Council.

It is a joint venture between Cheshire County Council, Vale Royal Borough Council and Weaver Vale Housing Trust with help from Winsford Youth Forum, Winsford Community Action Project and Greville Tenants and Residents Association.
