Kath and Keith enjoy 50 years of marriage

UNDERSTANDING and a shared sense of humour are the key to a happy marriage according to one Winsford couple.

And Kath and Keith Burrows, of Coniston Avenue, are certainly qualified to comment as they celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday.

The love-stuck couple met as youngsters at school in Wharton, when Kath, 74, would go to watch Keith play junior football.

They tied the knot at Christ Church, Wharton on September 6, 1958, and have stuck together, side by side, for the past 50 years.

Keith, 76, said: “I think we’ve got this far because we don’t have many wrong words and when we do, we get over it very quickly.”

Kath added: “I don’t believe people that say they don’t have words, everyone does, it’s just knowing how to deal with it.

“We have the same sense of humour. If I want him to do something he’ll always say I drive him to drink, we wind each other up.”

Family is important to the couple, with daughters Lynn, 49, and Cheryl, 47, living in Wharton along with their five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Kath added: “Having kids really helps keep you together. The grandkids especially, they are always in and out, wanting feeding or up to something.

“Just the other day I asked one of them what they would do if we emigrated and he said he’d have to come with us.”

The pair still enjoy holidays to Blackpool, where they have been going for the past 15 years.

Keith said: “We go down the prom, to the theatres and browse the amusements, it’s lovely, we both really enjoy it.”

When not holidaying or caring for grandchildren, Keith likes nothing more then to get in a game of bowls at Wharton Conservative Club, where Kath cheers him on from the side just like at his football matches all those years ago.
