WINSFORD Town Council says it is being left out of major decisions affecting the town after a skate park was removed without members being consulted.

The skate park, in Mount Pleasant Drive, was recently closed down by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) after the ramp was damaged.

CWAC says it is no longer viable to repair the facilities and is now considering whether the project should be decommissioned.

The decision has caused anger among many town councillors who say Winsford is losing out because too many decisions are being made outside the town.

At a meeting of the town council on Monday night town mayor, Clr Pam Booher, said: “We are the people who are elected to do this job and we need to be consulted.

“The skate park was vandalised but I am annoyed at the way it has been handled.

“We were not consulted at all. When I saw the skate park had been closed I thought the equipment had been stolen.”

Clr Mike Burns added: “I think this is a case of the chiefs at CWAC taking away facilities in the poorest areas and from those who need it the most.

“People come from outside the town to use this skate park. I know people from Middlewich who use it.”

Clr Stephen Burns, who also sits on CWAC, said even he and fellow CWAC councillors representing Winsford are being pushed aside.

He added: “This is indicative of CWAC not communicating with us – not just within the town council but with CWAC councillors as well.

“When we ask questions we hit a brick wall. We are the elected members of Winsford and we need to be consulted.”

Cheshire West and Chester council says it is looking for a more suitable site for a similar facility and is considering the front of the Winsford Lifestyle Centre, funding dependent.
