Guardian appeal for your memories

THE Guardian team is going back to basics in a bid to survive the recession – and we need your help.

Before ‘throw away culture’ became the norm, people had the craft of ‘making do’ down to a fine art and that’s the challenge that our Northwich, Winsford, Middlewich and Knutsford reporters face.

Over the next year Gina Bebbington is going to get her hands dirty in her greenhouse with a bit of grow-your-own fun, while James Wilson is going to pop his pinny on and have a go at some old-school cooking with basic rations.

David Morgan is going to look at how the people of mid-Cheshire spent their free time and see if it’s still possible to have a cheap night out, while Frances Kindon is going to get to grips with a spot of dressmaking.

With the expensive gym memberships and astronomical prices of tickets for football matches, sports reporter Andrew Simpson is going to explore how sport can be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

We also want to look at how people managed to get married, housekeep, raise children, holiday and date without having to take out a second mortgage and that is where we hope our readers can help.

As children of the eighties, our memories only extend as far back as milk tokens and the launch of Channel Five so we’re hoping you might be willing to share your experiences with us.

We are looking for old photographs as well as hints and tips on how we can achieve our tasks. Or perhaps you would like to show us how it’s done.

To get involved, call us on 01606 813621 or email frances.kindon@guardiangrp.co.uk.
