A NORTHWICH teenager was subjected to a serious sexual assault by another man in Kingsmead Square.
The 19-year-old man was attacked in the early hours of Sunday, June 21.
Yusuf Aran, 45, of Regency Way in Kingsmead, was charged later that day with sexual assault and appeared before magistrates at Vale Royal on Tuesday, June 23.
He was remanded in custody to appear at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday, July 7.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “In the early hours a 19-year-old local man was subjected to a serious sexual assault on Kingsmead Square in Northwich.
“As a result of this incident, a 45-year old man from the Northwich area was arrested and later charged.”
One Kingsmead resident, who did not wish to be named, said she saw forensic officers combing the area behind the shops in the hours after the assault.
She said: “I noticed a police forensic van at the back of Kingsmead shops that afternoon, with a few white-suited police forensic officers wandering around – one of them was inside Sam’s fish and chip shop.”
Insp Paul Loughlin of Northwich NPU stressed that it was an isolated incident and that they are not looking for any other offender.
He said: “I would like to reassure the public that this kind of offence is not a common problem and is certainly nothing for residents to worry about.
“There are no other people out there that we are looking for, this really was an isolated incident.”
