Emma Ward completes four-day swim at Winsford Lifestyle Centre to raise money for The Russett School in Weaverham

A WINSFORD mum completed a four-day swim to raise money for her son’s school – without any training.

Emma Ward, 31, of Kingsley Walk, began swimming just three months ago when her husband became a lifeguard at Winsford Lifestyle Centre.

But she took to the sport like a fish to water and decided to have a go at the 10-mile swim last week to raise funds for the Russett School in Weaverham which her son Ryan, nine, attends.

“I started out wanting to lose a bit of weight but after two months I could do a mile, and after three I could do two miles so I decided to go for it,” Emma said.

The challenge took seven hours and 45 minutes spread over four days to complete, with husband Brian offering moral support from the poolside.

She said: “I did four hours on the Monday but my muscles were burning after three, I just wanted to stop.

“Then on the Wednesday I wanted to stop after two miles but my husband was encouraging me and pushing me to keep going.

“All in all it wasn’t too bad. I’ve certainly toned up and I feel better in myself, I’ve got a lot more energy.”

Emma is now taking master classes at the centre to help her perfect her stroke, and plans to follow in her husband’s footsteps and train to become a lifeguard.

She added: “There has been talk of swimming The Channel as part of a team of 16 but we will have to see about that.”

Her mammoth effort is expected to raise around £200 towards the cost of outdoor play equipment and playground markings.
