Cheshire West and Chester Council to review speed limit on High Street, Winsford

THE council is set to review the speed limit on a stretch of road where a pensioner was knocked down last week.

The 70-year-old woman was crossing High Street near Moss Bank when she was in collision with a silver Mitsubishi saloon at around 12.50pm on Thursday.

She was taken by ambulance to Leighton Hospital, suffering from a head injury, an arm injury and bruising and needed six stitches in the back of her head.

The dual carriageway was closed for more than an hour, causing lunch-hour tailbacks through the town. It is thought she collided with a car as it exited the roundabout that joins Oakmere Road and High Street.

Chairman of the Grange Residents Association, Mike Kennedy, said residents have reached boiling point about safety on that road, and is calling for the speed limit to be clarified.

He said: “Ask anyone in Winsford and they will tell you about the problems with that road.

“It’s a terrible place to cross, I have to do it every day and you really are taking your life in your hands when you try to cross it.

“The trouble is that Oakmere Road is a 60mph so people are not sure what this stretch of High Street is. It’s still a dual carriageway; even I’m not sure what the limit is.

“So people slow down, get round the roundabout and then pick up speed straight away. You can be waiting four or five minutes just to get across.”

He added: “I’m not saying speed or anything like that was involved in this accident, but it is an ongoing problem.

“A car went through Finney’s chip shop last year. At night the road is used for drag racing, I get so many complaints from residents being kept up by the noise of engines speeding down there.”

A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council said it is currently looking at lowering the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on that stretch.

He said: "There is a 40mph speed limit along High Street between the B5074, Swanlow Lane, and Station Road roundabout.

"There is a proposal to reduce that length of road to 30mph as part of our speed limit review, and this may involve additional measures such as road markings and new signs.

"A decision will be made at a later date."
