Thought for the month with The Rev Tim Hanson

ARE you swapping gas suppliers?

The experience is a nightmare isn't it? The legislation is in place to protect the consumer, but it doesn't always feel like it.

The provider that you are moving too tells us to make a quick call to the provider that we are leaving.

But the problem is that it isn't a quick call because they don't want to lose you. Instead they make some amazing offer about how cheap they will make THEIR service in the future (why couldn't they have done that before?).

In the end I just come off the phone confused and without a clue what to do. I feel like a victim not a customer.

Do we sometimes feel the same when we are dealing with the whole issue of 'faith'? There seem to be so many.

And everyone seems to be telling me that I should believe what they believe. More than that, if I'm listening carefully then I will realise that they are not all the same, in fact they contradict each other. Help! What can I do?

Firstly, I need to take this seriously; issues about God and what it means to live in His world are more important than anything else.

Secondly, I need to find out what different people actually believe, rather than just accepting the caricatures that other people tell me.

Thirdly, I need to look at the world around me and ask whether any of what I've heard from other people actually makes any sense of what I see.

I love explaining to people 'what I believe' and 'why I believe it'. It's surprising that there are so many people around who think that they know but actually don't know at all.

Maybe we're too lazy to ask? Maybe too nervous? Don't be. Maybe we just don't care? We should, because it matters.
