Contract handed out for £7million Learning Zone

PLANS for a multi-million pound learning centre have moved a step closer after the construction contract was awarded to a local firm.

Middlewich-based Pochin Construction won the £7million contract to construct the new learning facility at Mid-Cheshire College in Winsford.

The project, which will be known as Winsford Learning Zone, aims to build a ‘centre for educational excellence’ and will deliver a wide range of courses for all ages.

The three-story building will be located in Weaver Street with Pochin carrying out the construction of the college building itself as well as landscaping and car parking. Work is expected to take 37 weeks.

When finished, the centre will accommodate 245 full time students and 73 part time staff.

Wanda Ford, from Mid Cheshire College, said: “The new Learning Zone will provide people of all ages with a fantastic opportunity to gain qualifications, which aid employment.

“Once completed, the Learning Zone will be an educational service, which both people of Winsford and the wider community can benefit from.”

The project is being led by Mid-Cheshire College and supported by a number of agencies including the Northwest Development Agency and Vale Royal Borough Council. Winsford’s two high schools and Sir John Deane’s College in Northwich are also involved in the project.

John Healey MP, Minister for Local Government, will be visiting the site tomorrow, Thursday, to meet representatives of the new authority – Cheshire West and Chester Council – before breaking the ground using a mini digger.
