Incinerator inquiry starts

A public inquiry into plans to build a waste incinerator in Cheshire has got under way.

Peel Holdings want to build an electricity generation incinerator - using waste as the fuel -﷓at a site at Ince Marshes, near Helsby.

And the outcome of the inquiry could shape future plans for similar plans in Northwich and Middlewich.

The inquiry, which is being held at the Forest Hills Hotel in Frodsham, is expected to last up two months.

The initial plan, to build the plant on land next to the Manchester Ship Canal, was rejected by county councillors in 2006.

Protestors over the Ince proposal share the fears of people in Lostock and Middlewich that if the plant is built, it will become a dumping ground for waste from the rest of the country and beyond.

A spokesperson for Cheshire County Council said: "Peel is expected to field at least 10 specialist witnesses to address issues such as need, design, landscaping, transport, noise, air quality, ecology and flooding.

"Cheshire County Council will counter with its own team of officers.

"Written and verbal submissions are expected from a range of local organisations and individuals too."

The decision is viewed as being key to the county's waste plan as Cheshire County Council will cease to exist when Cheshire is split into two new unitary local authorities next year.

If Dr Dick van Steenis is not called as an expert witness to speak against the incinerator proposal, how can the Inspector make a judgement on the health effects of incineration?

Dr van Steenis has spokne here in Shropshire against the Shrewsbury incinerator and also the opencasting application by UK Coal at The Ercall.

The advantage of a medically-qualified expert like Dr van Steenis is that he can cross-examine the pro-incinerator experts as well as explaining the health damage.

Dr van Steenis was successful at the 2002 public inquiry in Hull over WRG's application for an incinerator and he could "do the business" in Cheshire too, if asked.

I am totally and utterly disgusted and feel sick to my stomach in what this government is doing to Cheshire at the moment. YES THIS GOVERNMENT!! As those in power at westminster ARE the ones responsible for breaking up Cheshire County Council (costing the tax payer millions) and forcing incinerators to be built across the county!

Cheshire is going to become a cess-pit!

My suspicious mind tells me that these New Labour lot have engineered this. One to attempt to wreck the strength of the strong Conservative power bases across the Cheshire Belt and two, stick the incinerators there while we're at it so to speak.

The Cheshire County Council split and the building of incinerators in Cheshire is ENTIRELY political and nothing else but that!
