MOMENTUM is gathering to create a ‘Friends’ group for the revamped Winsford Town Park.

Winsford Town Council is hosting a sign-up session at the park this week to encourage volunteers to join in and support the green space which has been overhauled to the tune of £900,000.

Children’s author and resident John Malam, who proposed establishing a ‘Friends’ group, is encouraged by the number of people who have already expressed an interest via the newly launched Friends of Winsford Town Park Facebook group. He added there has also been interest from a local school.

John said: “Even though it’s the school holidays, a headteacher from a Winsford primary school has been in touch asking how schools can become involved, which is very encouraging.

“We’re meeting in September, when the new term starts, to find out how the classroom in the open air can be used to enhance and extend children’s learning.”

John explained it is important to set up an official group with a committee including a chairman, secretary and treasurer and written constitution, as this will allow the ‘Friends’ to apply for funding for the park.

He said: “I’ve previously been actively involved with the Friends of Winsford Town Library, which put on many fundraising events to support the work of the town library.”

The sign-up event will take place at the park on Friday, August 17, between 4pm and 7pm.

Jo Fawcett, park horticulturalist will be on hand to explain about the planting scheme, and what work a ‘Friends’ group could do to help look after the plants through the seasons.
