HOARDES of zombies descended on the GGO Community Group Bungalow in Winsford this afternoon.

The humans went head-to-head against the zombies on the field next to the community group’s base using Nerf blasters in an attempt to keep the mad scientist safe until he could find a cure.

Cllr Graham Cawley, who came up with the idea, said: “It is great to see these kids outside and having some fun in the fresh air. The game is so much more than just running about with blasters, they are all working together and building their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.

“I imagine if you asked kids these days to go outside and play for an hour they would not react in the best way, but make it seem like fun and they don’t even realise that they are getting in some exercise.”

Children who attended the event said that they would normally just watch TV, but this event has given them a chance to get outdoors and play, making plenty of new friends.

Volunteers from the GGO Bungalow, in Finsbury Walk, have been working hard all morning, Tuesday, to create the apocalyptic wasteland out of cardboard boxes and wooden screens.

Beccy Doolan, one of the volunteers, said: “We have had a blast with this event and the kids have all said how great it has been. I am sure lots more people will come along next week to see what all the fuss is about.

“There are lots of activities on over the summer holidays and we have proven that the GGO Bungalow is the place to be.”

Also involved in the event were Cheshire West Communities Together, who helped bring the idea of the zombie invasion to life.

A spokesperson said: “This has been a great way to get kids outdoors and playing in the green space that is literally right on their doorstep. Kids have come up to me today and said how much fun they have had, and their smiling faces were clear to see.

“We support lots of ideas like this and it is such a great feeling to come along and see it all come together first-hand.”

Representatives from Active Cheshire were at the event today to promote the benefits of keeping fit and healthy with fun activities like this.

The free event will be running at the GGO Community Group Bungalow every Tuesday during August from 1pm until 4pm.
