PRIMARY school children have experienced a lesson in the great outdoors exploring the Over Allotment site.

The annual Children’s Open Day event has been running in the Moss Bank site for the last 10 years now and invites schools from across the town to come along and see the award-winning allotment.

The eight schools who attended the event this weekend include Winsford High Street Primary School, Oak View Academy, Hebden Green Community School, Over St. John’s Primary School, Darnhall Community Primary School, St. Chad’s CofE Primary School, Over Hall Primary and The Grange Primary School.

John Malam, the event organiser said: “Every year we set schools a challenge to bring us scarecrows on a topical theme. This year’s theme was ‘suffragettes’, and we can honestly say the scarecrows are probably the best we have ever seen.

“You could tell the children and their teachers had really enjoyed researching the topic and making their scarecrows.”

The Town Mayor of Winsford, Cllr Gina Lewis, judged the scarecrows, and the name of the winning school will be revealed at the allotments Open Day on Saturday 14th July, when the winning class will be awarded with the Mayor’s Shield for the best scarecrow.

It is hoped that the scarecrows will be on show at the Winsford Academy on the evening of September 14, when the Mikron theatre company are in town with their suffragette show ‘Revolting Women’.

Winsford Town Council will contact the three winning schools shortly and representatives will be invited to attend the next open day and collect their prizes.
