We began our new Monday evening outdoor class this week and chose to go for a long walk in the Carrs, which was almost deserted in the rain.

We wandered along chatting about dog problems, family issues and life in general.

We did some obedience exercises and I helped out a few handlers who were struggling with their dogs.

One troubled rescue dog that had previously appeared totally shut down suddenly came out of her shell and trotted along happily wagging her tail in the downpour.

It gave everyone a real lift seeing she was on her way to rehabilitation.

My dog decided to act the clown, which seemed to amuse everyone.

Giant akita Levi, who 15 months ago was a seriously unbalanced individual, sauntered along like he was top dog at Crufts.

Since he won his silver cup for Most Improved Dog of the Year Levi, has been strolling around like Burlington Bertie. We’re thinking of getting him a silk hat and a walking cane.

We had some wonderful caverpoos in class recently. They are so easy to train.

One little dog was so quick he could have come to class on his own had he passed his driving test. Absolutely brilliant.

It was fun walking along training and chatting.

We got to know each other better, solved a few dog problems and had a laugh (mainly at my expense).

The dogs did excellently in that relaxed atmosphere. Walking together as a pack works particularly well on dogs with nervous issues.

Despite the rain we continued training until dusk and were still nattering when we reached the car park.

I really enjoyed the evening and seeing the improvement in dogs that came to us with ‘issues’ was wonderful.
