FIREFIGHTERS tackled a fire at Winsford recycling centre on Thursday afternoon.

A full evacuation took place at the site, at Woodford Park Industrial Estate in Leslie Road, before 3.15pm.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman says crews were alerted at 3.13pm.

They said: "On arrival crews discovered a small fire in a baling machine and that fire alarms had been sounded and a full evacuation had been completed.

"The electrics were isolated and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to tackle the flames.

"Due to the difficult location of the fire crews are removing part of the machinery to fully access the area where the fire is."

An update at 5pm reported that crews were removing waste from the baling machine.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze.

Two fire engines attended the incident, one from Winsford and one from Northwich.

The spokesman said: "Crews then carried out cooling operations and were in attendance for around four-and-a-half hours."
