TWO brothers from Winsford donated their entire piggy bank savings to help a firefighter after she broke her back.

Joel, 11, and his brother Jay, 10, were told by their mother Samantha about on-call firefighter Vicki Griffiths from Birchwood and how she was injured in a freak accident in the gym.

The boys reacted by donating more than £20 to the firefighter, which will be given alongside a collection that staff from the service are currently raising for their colleague.

As a thank you to the High Street Primary School pupils, Winsford firefighters invited them along to the station for a visit and treated them to a tour of the fire engine, and, with the help of Targeted Youth Support Worker Joanne Ayrton, they gave the pair a great afternoon as a thank you.

Mum Samantha said: “When I read about Vicki it made me so upset thinking of her not being able to be with her family.

"I told the boys that people were raising money to get her home and thought nothing of it. Next minute they said they wanted to help.

"They emptied their piggy banks and we took it along to the fire station with a box of chocolates. We thought that was the end of it until we got a call asking for us to call in at the fire station after school.

“They had a great time and got to roll hoses and sit in the fire engine. They both now want to be fire cadets at Winsford when they are old enough.

"I’d like to thank the firefighters and Joanne on their behalf for giving them an afternoon to remember.”

As part of the visit Joel and Jay got to dress up in fire kit and have a go at some of the fire drills the cadets carry out at their weekly drill nights.

Joanne said: “We got them to attach a hose to a hydrant and squirt water, soaking not only themselves but me as well, which they thought was great fun.

"They then rolled the hose back up and put it away before having a tour of the fire engine.”

The brothers also went to the service's headquarters where they met chief fire officer Paul Hancock, who thanked them with their chosen hand shake gesture of a 'fist pump'.

The pair also met Mark Cashin, deputy chief and Cllr Bob Rudd, Fire Authority chairman before witnessing three senior managers having their heads shaved to help raise money for Vicki.
