WINSFORD Town Mayor Cllr Mike Kennedy has condemned the latest arson attack in Winsford – this time causing ‘extensive damage’ to the Lifestyle Centre.

The Lifestyle Centre, at The Drumber, was set on fire by arsonists shortly before midnight on Wednesday, June 7.

Officers from Cheshire Police, and colleagues from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, swiftly attended the scene to find that a bike shed at the front of the building was well alight.

As a result of the fire, the bike sheds have been totally destroyed and extensive damage has also been caused to the exterior of the front of the building.

Town mayor Cllr Kennedy said he was ‘extremely annoyed’ to see the damage caused.

Cllr Kennedy said: “I viewed the damage first-hand the following day and I was saddened and extremely annoyed to see the damage caused by the fire in the bicycle bins. “I believe Cheshire Fire and Rescue and the police were quick to respond, however the damage was extremely evident. Burst windows through the heat behind the bins scorched/warped framing, cracking to windows to the side entrance and even the paving below.

“The Lifestyle Centre is a much used facility appreciated by a vast number of residents and I am sure they are as shocked as I am to see the result of this nuisance fire.

“It was however nice to see this wonderful facility fully open the following day. The people who set these fires need to realise that they may believe they are just setting a nuisance fire, but sometimes the carnage that results can be horrendous.

“If anyone knows who is responsible please contact the police immediately, they are your facilities they are destroying.”

Winsford was plagued with arson attacks towards the end of last year and beginning of this year, but incidents have died down in the past few months, with any rare arson fires being minor until this incident last week.

Cheshire Police are now appealing for information following the attack.

Anyone with information should call Cheshire Police on 101.

Despite the fire causing a lot of damage, the election count for Eddisbury went ahead as planned at the Lifestyle Centre.
