THE mayor of Winsford has spoken on behalf of Winsford this morning to offer support to people affected by the terrorist attack in Manchester.

Cllr Mike Kennedy has spoken to the Guardian about his shock and anger following the attack last night which has killed 22 people.

Cllr Kennedy said: “I was in the council offices at about 6.15pm preparing for an annual meeting that allows the public their democratic right in what seems to be this morning a very small part of the country.

“I returned home and within two hours I found out something so horrific had happened so close by.

“We’re part of a larger democratic society where this filth should not be tolerated.

“When something awful like this happens the community in a democratic society needs to come together to support each other no matter what faith you belong to.

“One of the issues discussed last night at the meeting was about young people and it just makes it so much more horrific to hear that it was young people targeted.

“As mayor of Winsford I’m shocked and appalled and I don’t have the words anymore to describe the people who carry out these attacks.

“I know Winsford people often travel to Manchester for music concerts and it would be so easy for people in Winsford to be caught up in this. I just hope that none of our young people or residents were caught up in this.

“My support goes out to the people of Manchester and the surrounding areas and families that were caught up in it. On behalf of the people of Winsford, we send our best wishes.

“It really shocks you to the core. Manchester is less than 30 miles away from Winsford and it goes to prove that if these attacks want to be carried out anywhere in the UK, they can be. And even though we feel Winsford is so far removed from it, we have all got to be very vigilant every single day.”
