HUNDREDS of people will join town mayor Cllr Steve Smith this week for a special celebration of Winsford and the achievements of Winsfordians.

As in previous years, the town mayor’s ‘Oscars’ will be awarded across a number of categories, including a series of special awards from the mayor to mark his year in office.

Scores of nominations were submitted by Winsford residents, and local businesses have generously sponsored each category.

On the night itself a representative from each sponsor will open the gold envelope and announce the winner from a shortlist of three in each category.

Oscars were awarded for 13 categories last year.

But there will be far more to the event than the presentation of the awards, with a host of local talent adding to the event.

Cllr Smith said: “The evening is about celebrating this great town of ours. Everyone involved lives in the town or has links to Winsford, including all our ‘Oscar’ nominees.

“I am really grateful to our sponsors, who without their help, this wonderful event would not have happened. All the nominees – not just those awarded an ‘Oscar’, are winners and great ambassadors for our town.”

As has been made a tradition of the awards, a ‘Walk of Contribution Award’, sponsored by Weaver Vale Housing Trust, will be given out and the winner will have their name engraved on a Hollywood Boulevard-style star outside Winsford Lifestyle Centre.

Last year’s winners were artists and owners of the Cross Hatch Gallery Derek and Anne Johnson, who now have their names on the Walk of Contribution.

The event takes place at the Winsford Lifestyle Centre from 7pm on Friday, April 21.
