A PROPOSAL has been made to the Boundary Commission to bring together Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich into a single Parliamentary constituency.

The proposal comes from Northwich Town Council following the Boundary Commission’s review of Parliamentary constituencies last month.

The current proposals from the Boundary Commission are for Northwich to join Winsford in a new ‘Northwich and Eddisbury’ constituency, but Northwich Town Council has counter-proposed for Middlewich to also be in the same constituency.

Northwich Town Council presented its proposal at the commission’s public hearing in Chester on Thursday and Winsford town council member Cllr Tony Hooton also spoke at the meeting, backing the proposal.

Cllr Hooton said: “The town council haven’t discussed it yet so I couldn’t speak for all of the council but my thoughts are that we should support a constituency based on Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich.

“I think we are three towns that have quite a lot in common and we represent the middle of the county. At the minute it feels like we are tagged onto a huge rural constituency and to be together with Northwich and Middlewich would benefit Winsford.”

Members of Middlewich Town Council are also yet to discuss the council’s stance on the proposal but town council clerk, Jonathan Williams, said they will not do so before speaking to Fiona Bruce MP.

Jonathan Williams, Middlewich town council clerk, said: “Before we consider anything we would like to discuss it with our own MP. It’s on the table and we will look at it at some point but the first point of call will be Fiona Bruce MP.”
