HEAD teacher of Grange Community Primary School in Winsford led by example when she got her head shaved for charity in front of her pupils.

Hazel Palmer, head teacher of the Grange, decided she wanted to do something to ‘make a small difference’ in support of one of her pupil’s parents, fighting breast cancer.

To tie in with the Macmillan Big Coffee Morning day, the head teacher decided to raise money for Macmillan by getting her head shaved in the school hall while her pupils watched on.

Hazel said: “We had a parent who suffered breast cancer so I decided to do this in support of her.

“Everyone knows someone who has had their life affected somehow by cancer and we always say that we wish we could do something to make a small difference, so we wanted to show to the children that we put our words into action.

“I was very touched by the amount of people who got involved and put themselves out for a good cause. The hall was a very emotional place.

“We are touched and humbled by the generosity people have shown in raising money for this. Actions speak louder than words and they have shown that here.”

Two pupils, Charleigh Dixon, 10, and Mille Flack, eight, were inspired by their head teacher and decided to follow suit, also getting 30cm each cut from their hair.

The girls donated their hair to the Little Princess Trust to make real hair wigs for children going through chemotherapy.

Hazel added: “The two children came to me and said they wanted to do the same and I was just so pleased that I had inspired them.

“It brought tears to my eyes because it’s a sacrifice for anyone but such a big sacrifice for them.”
