WINSFORD is set for another record-breaking week as the town’s largest ever travelling fun fair kicks off.

This year’s Winsford Salt Fair started today and will run for five days until Sunday, September 18.

Town mayor, Cllr Steve Smith introduced the Salt Fair five years ago in his last stint as mayor as a way of celebrating the town’s heritage and the fair has grown bigger year on year, breaking records each year for being the largest travelling fair the town has seen.

This year’s fair will continue the trend with 11 adult rides, three fun houses and ghost train – now the second largest fair in Cheshire after Knutsford Royal May Day.

In his second turn as mayor five years on, Cllr Smith is ecstatic with how much the event has grown and been accepted by the community.

Cllr Smith said: “I wish to thank everyone who has played a part big or small in the planning of this year’s event.

“When I began this event last time I was Town Mayor in 2012 by bringing back this 1280 Charter Fair I never imagined some of the changes and popularity so quickly.

“So much has happened as a result of this event, the transformation of the Marina for boaters is just one of these, not just for visiting boaters to the Regatta that has since been added, but all year round. And of course the Fun Fair, this year again breaking all records as the largest travelling Fun Fair that Winsford has ever seen.”

As part of the Salt Fair, the mayor’s civic parade will be held on Sunday, at 10.45am, followed by a civic service and regatta.

Cllr Smith added: “I am honoured and privileged to be holding my civic parade and service at this event, I thank my husband and consort Mark and my Chaplin for their support and most of all the public for supporting this, please come along and enjoy.”

The parade will leave Wyvern House and turn left onto Dingle Lane, left into Winsford High Street (A54), left into Dene Drive, and right into the Dene Drive car park where the service will take place.
