NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Winsford United player, George Ward, suffered a horrific leg-break in a match at St Luke's Barton Stadium tonight.

The Winsford right-back was injured in what was described as a '50/50 block tackle' with an Irlam FC player just six minutes into the game.

He suffered a double leg fracture, breaking his tibia and fibula just above the ankle.

Play was stopped while paramedics treated Ward, who has now been taken to Leighton Hospital where he is with his parents.

The match has now been postponed.

Bob Astles, club secretary, said: "It was just a block tackle, there was nothing malicious in it.

"They made the decision to abandon the game because the players were quite upset by it. It really didn't look good at all.

"We hope he has a speedy recovery and the club will support him any which way we can."
