A MUM who hosted a fundraising event in memory of her son who died from an asthma attack, has thanked the Winsford community after raising more than £3,500.

Julie Carter and her son Richard, from Winsford, held a fundraising night of entertainment at The Red Lion in Wharton Road on Saturday in memory of her son, Daniel.

Daniel died while on a holiday in 1994 at the age of eight when he suffered a fatal asthma attack and the event at the weekend marked what would have been his 30th birthday year.

Julie aimed to raise £2,000 for Asthma UK, but was blown away by the support of friends, family and the community, raising £3,586 at the last count, with more still to collect.

Julie said: “The event was amazing. I’d like to thank all our family and friends who turned up and a special thank you to Jo Tyrer who helped us organise it and everyone who helped us on the night.”

As well as raising money for Asthma UK, Julie also wanted to raise awareness of asthma, saying that a lot of people do not realise that the condition can be life-threatening.

She explained: “A lot of people don’t know you can die of it, but actually three people every day die of asthma in the UK.”

Louise Thomas, Asthma UK’s head of events and community, said: “It’s thanks to the support of people like Julie that Asthma UK is able to fund world-leading research to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for asthma.”
