WINSFORD residents have responded with anger at news that a prison could be built in Winsford Industrial Estate.

Antoinette Sandbach MP revealed last week that early discussions were being carried out surrounding the possibility of building a prison in the industrial estate.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) later confirmed that the Government is exploring the site with a view to potentially putting a prison there.

Members of the community reacted strongly to the news on social media and around 600 people have now signed an online petition set up by the Eddisbury MP, Ms Sandbach.

Commenting on Facebook, Marjorie Jones said: “Way too close to local housing. If any prisoners escape it will put lives in danger, they need to hold a public meeting.”

Daryl Clarke added: “I find it a bit unfair to say the least. Northwich gets a brand new shopping centre and a nice little place to put your boats. What does Winsford get? Yes, a prison, thanks a lot.”

Commenting on the petition page, Linda Blake said: “I am fed up to the back teeth with Winsford being the whipping boy of Cheshire. Stop it now. No Prison in Winsford, shameful.”

There were also a few residents who disagreed with the angry reaction from the majority of the town.

Julie Smith commented on Facebook: “What’s the problem? There are prisons all over Britain and it would provide jobs.”
