CHILDREN from nine Winsford and Whitegate primary schools attended a ‘classroom in the open air’ at the Over Allotments last week.
The Over Allotments Association held its eighth annual children’s open day on Friday, June 17, giving guided tours around Winsford’s ‘secret garden’, which was voted best allotment site in Cheshire in 2015.
Plot-holders acted as guides and school children brought scarecrows that they had made on the theme of the Queen in celebration of her 90th birthday.
John Malam, chair of the Over Allotments Association, said: “It’s always a joy to welcome schools to the classroom in the open air. Children see fruit and veg being grown in the heart of Winsford, and pick up ideas that they can use at school and at home.”
The scarecrows, which will be on duty on the plots for the following year, will be judged by Winsford Deputy Mayor Cllr Mike Kennedy and consort Mrs Hilary Kennedy.
The winning will be announced at Over Allotments Open Day on Saturday, July 16, and the school will receive the Mayor’s Shield for Best Scarecrow.
