A FATHER and son volunteering duo with Cheshire Army Cadet Force and a young sea cadet, all from Winsford, have been honoured by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant at his annual Awards for Cheshire.

Maj Andrew Webster, 50, and son Sgt Maj Instructor Andrew Webster, aged 28, were awarded the Certificate of Merit, recognised as a laudatory honour throughout the armed services, in recognition of their exceptional service as Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.

Maj Andrew Webster originally joined Cheshire Army Cadet Force in 1987, serving for six years and attaining the rank of Sgt Maj Instructor, before assuming the role of county training officer in 2013.

Andrew said: “I’m really excited to receive this award, and so happy to have been nominated. I’ve seen lots of young people develop confidence and skills – that’s what gives me the biggest reward.”

His son, Sgt Maj Instructor Andrew Webster, an interactive learning technology developer with Total People in his day job, has been a member of Cheshire Army Cadet Force for fifteen years. He joined as a cadet in 2001, becoming Cadet Company Sergeant Major.

He said: “I was really surprised when I heard I’d been nominated for this award, and really appreciative of the recognition. I’ve been involved with Army Cadets since I was 13 and it’s a part of my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the experiences I’ve been able to have.”

Leading cadet Jack Preston, aged 16, was also appointed Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Cheshire, one of the highest accolades a cadet can achieve.

The appointment means Jack will hold the position from September and will assist the Lord Lieutenant, David Briggs with his official duties including royal visits to the county.

Jack Preston joined Winsford, Middlewich and Northwich Sea Cadets in 2010 as a junior cadet aged 10, participating in almost all community and fundraising activities arranged by the unit, far in excess of what might be expected.

“I feel really privileged to receive this award,” Jack said. “Sea Cadets has played a big part in making me the person that I am. I really enjoy helping other cadets and passing my knowledge and experience on to them. I also enjoy being part of a team.”
