A TEAM of determined fundraisers from Winsford will be taking part in a 24-hour rowing challenge this summer and are appealing for others to join them.

A team of 32 have been training – some for more than a year – in preparation for the challenge at the Old Star on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, and the team is looking to find eight more.

The challenge, which will see the team look to travel the equivalent of the circumference of the UK, will aim to raise money for four charities - Ataxia UK, St Luke's Hospice, Scoliosis UK, and Christies.

Carol Roberts, one of the organisers of the 24-hour challenge wanted to raise money for Ataxia UK and Scoliosis UK after her mum died in 2014.

Carol said: “After losing Mum in July 2014, due to complications from having Cerebellar Ataxia, I felt I needed to do something, not only to raise money for the charity, but also to raise awareness of the condition.

“This is the weekend where all the rowing events in the Olympics reach there finale and I'm hoping to create a real sense of community that weekend. We have worked hard developing the team, and we have a team training session on Tuesdays at DW Fitness Winsford, to help with technique, and motivation. It's great to see people getting fitter and stronger, and more confident.

“This will have been 14 months in the planning, by the time August comes, and some of the team members have been in training for that length of time too. That's commitment to a cause if ever I saw it.”

This will be the third challenge Carol has been involved in organising after a six-hour spinathon in 2014 and a wattbike challenge last year.

Both events together raised more than £8,000.

Carol added: “It’s an amazing sum of money, I can't thank people enough for their input.”
