WINSFORD residents 'trapped in unaffordable debt' may not need to turn to payday loans and doorstep loan sharks as a result of a new credit union partnership.

West Cheshire Credit Union and Winsford Churches Together have come together to launch a credit union membership point at Winsford Library.

Volunteers will be on hand each Thursday between 11am to 1pm, to offer practical saving and affordable lending facilities to residents and provide a real alternative to payday loans and doorstep lenders.

Reverend Anne Gibson said: "We hope this branch of the credit union will be of benefit to many people at risk of becoming trapped in unaffordable debt.”

Established in 2004, the West Cheshire Credit Union is a not-for-profit, financial co-operative that provides credit union services across west Cheshire and Chester.

The aim of the credit union is to provide ethical, safe and affordable financial services to all members of the local community and particularly to those who are unable to access mainstream products.

The new partnership will work together to offer improved accessibility to financial products and services, encourage greater financial literacy among members and develop public awareness of credit union services.

It will also be able to provide products that meet a range of needs, including people with low incomes and small businesses and support the availability of affordable credit.
