THE UK will face economic repercussions if it leaves the EU, Winsford councillors have warned.

David Cameron faced intense scrutiny in the House of Commons on Wednesday over his EU reform deal, which paves the way for the UK's EU referendum to be held in June.

The Prime Minister was grilled by MP’s over the proposals – including from fellow Tory, Boris Johnson, mayor of London.

Opposition councillors on Winsford Town Council have also now had their say on whether the UK should remain in the EU.

Cllr Stephen Burns, Labour councillor for Swanlow ward, said: “You just have to look at the water front in Liverpool to see what membership of the EU can do.

“There is massive investment from Europe for regeneration in the UK and membership also means we can negotiate trade deals as a trading block when dealing with the US and China.

“We live in a democracy and if we choose to leave then we will just have to deal with the consequences and I sincerely hope that if we do leave the warnings of increased unemployment and another economic crisis do not come to pass.”

Cllr Burns’ comments were echoed by Cllr Malcolm Gaskill, Lib Dem councillor for Swanlow ward.

He said: “Make no mistake being a member of the EU is the reason why Toyota are in Derby, Nissan are in Sunderland Honda are in Swindon and many other overseas manufacturers are based here in the UK, providing thousands of Jobs.

“London would no longer be the financial capital of the world, as several international banks have already made clear, they would re-locate to Frankfurt or some other European base if we come out of the EU.”

Cllr Gaskill said he welcomed the changes proposed in the deal, though he admitted it likely won’t be enough to appease those who want to leave the union.

He said: “Make no mistake, whatever concessions Mr Cameron delivers, they will not be enough for the ‘outers’."

Cllr Burns warned the wider debate has become too focused on immigration.

He said: “My fear is the whole debate will come down to immigration and the ‘fear factor’ and scare mongering will lead to a vote to leave the EU.

“Unfortunately UKIP and right wing activists have been successful in making the whole EU debate about immigration.

“People need to remember Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Eritrea are not in Europe so we would still have to deal with immigration issues if we left the EU.”
