RESIDENTS have voiced their concerns regarding a roll-out of further 20mph roads in Winsford.

Last week, Cheshire West and Chester Council's (CWAC) cabinet voted to impose the reduced speed limit in residential areas.

The roll-out will focus on roads where average speeds are currently less than 24mph and around schools where the mean speed is less than 30mph.

Following the vote, residents have taken to Facebook to question the move.

Simon Boone said: “20mph zones have to be self-controlled with horizontal or vertical deflections, most roads are that congested they don't encourage high speeds.

“For me it's a complete waste of money and money that could be better spent. It's all subject to public consultation and unless there are recorded accidents, what is the point?

“It will also create more congestion at peak times. Smaller sections of roads maybe and during certain times of the day, but wide areas is a big no.”

CWAC's cabinet agreed to fund the 20mph schemes with a budget of £200,000 per year for four years.

Winsford resident Rob Beal believes the new zones will prove ineffective.

He said: “The people who speed will speed no matter what limit is put in place.”

The proposed 20mph zones will be advertised through a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) and communities will be consulted.

Some residents do support the move.

Marie Baker Barnett said: “Should be 20mph around all schools anyway, but this is a start.”
