THE next Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs could be among some of the brightest young minds in Winsford – and an upcoming technical college wants to unlock their potential.

Youngsters in the town have the opportunity to explore pursuing a career in science or technology at a workshop held by Crewe Engineering and Design University Technical Col-lege (UTC).

The workshop will take place on Tuesday, January 19 from 2pm to 4pm at New Images Youth Club, Nixon Drive.

David Terry, principal of Crewe Engineering and Design UTC, said: “It’s vital that we open our doors to young people to develop their love for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

“The success of our last event was a further indication that this region is filled with extraordinary young people, who are preparing themselves for a bright future in engineering.”

“The UTC will offer exciting and challenging learning experiences and give the future scientists, de-signers and engineers of tomorrow the ability to thrive in their chosen career path.

“I look forward to meeting many parents, students and members of the community, I am delight-ed to help drive the educational offering in Cheshire forward.”

The £10.6 million university technical college – a type of secondary school that is led by a sponsor university – will deliver courses for 14-18-year-olds.

Crewe Engineering and Design UTC, which is set to open September 2016, has already gained sup-port from a number of business and academic partners.

These include Bentley Motors, Manchester Metropolitan University, Siemens, Bosch, OSL Rail, General Electrics, Chevron Racing, Unipart Logistics, Optical 3D, LEONI, James Walker, and Cheshire East Council.

Marlies Rogait, board member for HR at Bentley, said: “We believe the UTC will be a core part of Bentley’s long-term growth and human resources strategy.

“By focusing on young people at 14, we expect higher standards of applicants coming out of the UTC at the age of 18 and 19.

“We also want to see UTC learners taking up roles across the supply chains and other partner com-panies, improving quality in SMEs in the area.”
