A FIRE that destroyed part of a derelict building in Winsford was believed to have been started deliberately.

Emergency services were contacted at 3.41pm on Tuesday, November 30 following reports of a fire at a property Smokehall Lane, Winsford.

Due to the intensity of the fire, the part of the building involved in the fire collapsed, though no-one was harmed during the incident.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Four fire engines were called to the scene of a fire involving part of a derelict portable building.

“The building measured 25m by 35m, with 10m by 5m of it fully involved in fire.

“Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, used hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.”

As firefighters brought the blaze under control, the number of fire engines was reduced to two and the area was then damped down by the remaining firefighters.

All fire engines had left the scene by 17.10pm.

The Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed that they believe the fire had been started deliberately.
