A GROUP of youths set fireworks off at police officers on the Wharton Estate in Winsford on Bonfire night.

Police officers had to dodge fireworks being aimed at them in an incident that also saw houses being targeted as well as a police vehicle having its window smashed.

Eight youths have now been arrested for violent disorder in relation to the incident and are currently on bail.

Insp Dave Snasdell from Winsford Police said: “A number of police officers were on patrol in the area as part of a pre-planned policing operation for bonfire night. However, during the evening a police vehicle had a window smashed and a small number of individuals aimed fireworks at police officers and residential properties.

“The actions of a small number of individuals caused danger to local residents and police officers. Fortunately, no injuries occurred but the deliberate targeting of properties and people with fireworks is extremely dangerous.”

If anyone has information regarding the incidents on the Wharton Estate they should contact the Police on 101. Police officers will be continuing additional patrols in the area.

Insp Snasdell added that the incident tarnished what was otherwise the best Hallowe’en and bonfire night period in recent years.

He added: “Bonfire night saw calm in all areas of Northwich and Winsford except the Wharton Housing Estate.

“We traditionally see an increase in calls to all emergency services during this period, particularly around Halloween when the activities of a small number ‘trick or treaters’ borders on antisocial or criminal in nature, and members of our community do not want the unwanted intrusion.

“However, this year, we have had lower levels than usual due to the proactive and visible Operation Treacle presence.”
