WINSFORD Flash Sailing Club held landmark celebratory evening to mark the 80th anniversary of its clubhouse.

Originally founded in 1931 as Northwich Sailing Club, in 1935 members decided to move to the banks of the Bottom Flash in Winsford.

As the club grew, a hut was built for use as a changing room and boathouse and by 1948 the decision was taken to build a new clubhouse.

In 1960 the club purchased land surrounding the clubhouse, with further land being acquired in the 70’s.

In 1977 the club was renamed Winsford Flash Sailing Club and has continued to grow ever since.

Club Commodore, Ian Foulkes, said: “For a club to celebrate 80 years sailing is a fantastic achievement and a lot has to be said for the commitment and dedication of our members over many years.

“I’m proud to be the Commodore of Winsford Flash Sailing Club in this momentous year – here’s to the next 80.”

Club publicity officer, Nigel Hughes, added: “It’s a wonderful achievement. A lot of hard work has gone into running and improving Winsford Flash Sailing Club over the last 80 years.

“I am sure those pioneering sailing members in the 1930s would have been proud of the legacy they left us and our town, all those years ago.”
