HUNDREDS of farmers stopped lorries from getting into the Morrisons distribution centre in Rudheath in protest against falling milk prices and instead led a cow into the depot.
Around 500 protestors turned out last week on Thursday, August 6, from 8pm, outside the depot on King Street, Rudheath, and barricaded the entrance with metal fences and tractors.
The farmers, who were protesting against major super markets charging low prices for milk, stopped several lorries from entering the depot and on one occasion offered the super market giant a consolation of a cow for them to produce their own milk.
Tom Houghton, Farmers For Action campaigner, said: “We’re here to put pressure on the retailers, i.e. Morrisons, because this is not going to go away. We want a fairer price for the milk we are producing because at the minute it’s being sold for cheaper than it costs to produce.
“The turnout is excellent, it’s one of the first times that no matter what you do in farming, they’re all united. We’ll see if it makes any difference but it’s got to make a difference because if it doesn’t, the whole structure of the rural community will collapse.”
