MANCHESTER City fan Don Micklewright is to cheer his team on from the stands for the first time in more than 60 years – at the grand old age of 79.

Don, from Weaverham, saw City play for the first time at the end of The Second World War after being taken to Maine Road by his dad William when he was 11.

He continued going to Maine Road until the mid 1950s, but has not been to see a City match since.

However that is to change since he joined the fledgling Mid Cheshire branch of the Manchester City FC Supporters Club.

The branch has 70 members after launching in March, and Don is its oldest member.

Since joining he has applied for a season ticket for Manchester City, and is looking forward to watching them play at the Etihad Stadium.

His first home game should be a memorable occasion, with City to take on the champions, Chelsea, next Sunday.

“I saw an article about the new supporters club in the Northwich Guardian, and joined the club to find out how they arranged transport to the games,” said Don, who has also been a lifelong fan of Northwich Vics.

“I have more opportunity to go to matches as my circumstances are changing, and have arranged with a chap from Middlewich who is a member of the club to car share for home games.

“He took me around the Etihad last week, and we will take it in turns to drive to the ground. City play attractive football, and I am looking to forward to watching matches in real life.

“My first game was watching them play Tottenham on February 1st 1947, when they were both in the second division.

“It was the first big match I had been to, and City won 1-0 and went on to win the division.”

The supporters club is attracting young and old, with the youngest member being five-year-old James Packer from Winsford, whose stepdad Anthony Blow is also a member.

“I have had a City season ticket for eight years, and have been going to the games regularly for about 28 years,” said Anthony, 34, who comes from Manchester and has lived in Winsford for three years.

“James has been playing football since he was two years old, and I took him to his first City game when he was two and a half.

“Football should be for all the family, and it’s a way of bringing all the family together. James has been training with Winsford Diamonds, where I am a coach, for 12 months, and his favourite City player is Sergio Aguero.”

The club’s Northwich meetings have switched to The Swinging Witch pub, which hosts a meeting on Thursday, September 24, following a meeting at the Old Star in Winsford on Thursday, August 27.

The supporters club can be contacted by emailing oakie@fsmail.net, and branch subscriptions are £10 for people aged 16 and over, free for under 16s and £2 for over-60s.
