A WINSFORD youth centre is looking for trustees to help secure its long-term future following a year of refurbishments.

New Images Youth Centre, on Nixon Drive, is preparing to show off all the hard work that has helped transform it following years of uncertainty at their open day on Saturday, August 8.

Former councillor and current trustee, Bob Barnton, revealed they are looking for more trustees to help secure the centre’s future, which is operated by the Winsford Youth Forum.

Bob said: “We've done a governance review and we realise we need to get more trustees on board to help support the work of the youth forum.”

The future of New Images has been uncertain for several years, having been previously earmarked for the demolition in 2012 by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

However, The Winsford Academy, which was Verdin High School at the time, took over the running of the centre.

Last year, the New Images trustees secured a 12-month lease for the building, though under the agreement any party could pull out of at any time, making finding new investors tricky.

“It’s a fragile situation,” Bob said. “We have to prove ourselves.”

Cllr Mike Kennedy, a trustee, added: “In these uncertain times the trustees, staff and volunteers at the forum will ensure we will continue to move forward, and will certainly provide a New Image youthy in name and nature."

Some of the refurbish work includes two separate gyms, one of which may be turned into a dance hall.

And on August 9, the RWA Wrestling School – ran by former WWE star, Andy Baker – will begin classes at New Images.

With all of the work that has been done, it appears as though the future of New Images might not be as dire as once feared.

Cllr Kennedy said: “To say I am excited would be an understatement.

“The Youth Forum and New Images will be able to show our massive commitment to the youth of Winsford, for now and well into the future.

“Exciting times lay ahead, with plenty of plans in the pipe-line.”

The open day takes place on Saturday, August 8, from 12pm-6pm. For more information, contact 01606 593724.
