GARDENING fanatics dug deep to try and scoop a prize at the Over Allotments open day over the weekend.

The annual open day, on Moss Bank, took on Saturday, July 25.

This year’s event featured a range of stalls, including an exhibition of paintings of Over Allotments by Winsford artist, Derek Johnson.

“It was a very successful day,” Mike Allen, from the Over Allotments Association, said.

“Numbers were down a little bit because we had a bit of competition from the fire service’s open day and further afield, but we still had a good turnout.

“People seemed to be really enjoying themselves, including all the stall holders. Lots of people came to see what we do. We are considered one of the best if not the best allotment sites in Cheshire.

“The weather was much better than last year as well. We made around £600 as well, 20 per cent of which will go to St Luke’s Hospice, our chosen charity of the year.”

Winsford town mayor, Cllr Ailsa Gaskill-Jones, awarded prizes for best plots at midday, including the much-coveted Dempster Challenge Cup, Winsford's oldest community award.

The honour, which was awarded to Ken Nelson, has been presented annually for the owner of the best plot since 1926.

Mike added: “Ken really impressed the judges with his plot. He scored an incredibly high 173 out of 200. He really set the bar high.”
