A TEAM of young volunteers joined together to give a Winsford care home's garden a new lease of life.

As part of the 12-week Prince's Trust Programme, the team had to complete a community project and chose Over Dene House Care Home.

The Prince's Trust programme is led by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and gives young people between the ages of 16 and 25 the opportunity to learn new skills, complete qualifications and gain greater self-confidence by working within the community.

For the latest community project, the team of 10 young people got stuck in to redesigning a garden, which residents can use and have easy access to.

Raised beds were built and pupils from the Winsford Academy grew plants to put in them, some of which were donated by staff at Northwich B & Q.

The team raised money to do the project by bag packing in a local supermarket. This enabled them to buy paving slabs for a small footpath and wood the make the raised beds.

Jason McTigue, team leader for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The programme aims to move young people into full time employment.

"By doing this community project it helped them to gain practical experience but also skills in how to project manage and budget."
