A TEACHER from Winsford who recovered from a life-changing brain injury has vowed to pay back the charity that helped rebuild her life.

Joanne Atkinson, 48, from Winsford, suffered a subdural haemorrhage that left her with a devastating brain injury while at a friend’s 50th birthday in 2012.

Joanne, who works as a family support worker at Hungerford Primary School in Crewe, was rushed to the Walton Centre in Liverpool where she received emergency treatment.

Her recovery was aided by ongoing support from Alex Power, an acute trauma support nurse for the brain injury charity, Headway.

Joanne said: "When I first sustained my brain injury, I withdrew into myself and felt like I was going crazy. Alex was superb in making me feel normal and realise that I wasn't alone.

“Even now I find it reassuring to keep her number in my phone.”

Joanne's brain injury left her with memory problems, fatigue and other hidden consequences that still challenge her today.

After making a remarkable recovery, last week Joanne cut the ribbon to declare the Headway's new charity shop, in Winsford Cross Shopping Centre, open for business.

"I was thrilled to see a new Headway shop opening in Winsford as I would have been totally lost without the continued support of Alex in the early stages of my recovery," Joanne said.

"The new shop looks absolutely beautiful and I really hope it generates awareness of the work Headway does to support families living with the devastating effects of brain injury."

Joanne has signed up as a volunteer at the store, which is looking for more helping hands to donate their time and efforts.

Carol Tennet, head of retail at Headway, added: "Jo is a shining example that there can be a great life after brain injury.

“We feel very honoured that she agreed to support the cause and attend the opening ceremony. We rely heavily upon the support of the public to make our shops a success.

“Whether you are a brain injury survivor or simply want to volunteer in your spare time, anyone is welcome to come alone, say hello and find out more about Headway."
