A GROUP of Winsford salt workers took part in a charity football match in memory of a former colleague who died of cancer.

Employees at Compass Minerals UK held the fundraiser at Barton Stadium, Winsford United F.C., on Sunday, May 17.

The Compass Minerals UK Charity Committee organised the match in remembrance of Glynn Carter, who died in 2012.

Glynn worked at Winsford Salt Mine for 34 years, and was a passionate football supporter.

Colleagues, family and friends joined together to watch the two teams – the Salt Team and the Storage Team, formed from the two businesses at Compass Minerals UK, the Salt Mine and the DeepStore Document and Archive business – battle it out for the Glynn Carter Memorial Trophy.

Mike McAuley, chairman of the CMP UK Charity Committee, said: “We would like to thank all those who supported and sponsored the event, it was an enjoyable day and a fitting tribute to Glynn and his family.

Glynn’s son Chris played for the Salt Team and his Granddaughter Lily led the teams onto the pitch for a minute’s applause for her Granddad, which was watched by Barbara, Glynn’s wife.

"We are pleased to have raised £754.59 for Saint Luke’s Cheshire Hospice in memory of Glynn.”

The Salt Team clinched the trophy in a thrilling contest, which finished 4-2.

Entertainment was provided by Winsford band, The Thingyos.
