GREEN-FINGERED garden enthusiasts flooded Winsford over the weekend for the

Over Allotments Association’s annual plant sale.

Thousands of plants were on sale at the plant shop, which is run by plot-holders from the town’s Over Allotments.

The team from the Moss Bank allotment site needed a small fleet of vans to transport an estimated 5,000 plants into Winsford Cross Shopping Centre.

A particular highlight was a rare American heritage tomato called Mortgage Lifter, which first grown in the 1930s.

“Our heritage tomatoes were incredibly popular,” said John Malam, chair of the Association. “By 9:30 we’d sold out of some varieties.”

“People look forward to our plant sale, and it’s great to see the community supporting it.

“The only downside is we’ve now used up all our plant pots and module trays, so we’ll have to start collecting them all over again for next year’s sale.”

Over Allotments Association has offered to recycle any plant pots or trays. These can be bagged up and left at the Moss Bank entrance.

Despite just wrapping up the 2015 plant sale, the Over Allotments Association is already planning for next year’s event.

The 2016 Over Allotments plant sale will take place on Saturday, May 21.
