A BEACON burned brightly in Winsford on Friday evening to marking the 70th anniversary of VE Day.
Winsford town mayor, Cllr Gina Lewis, climbed to the top of the tower of Christ Church, Wharton, on Friday, May 8, to light the beacon at 9.32pm precisely.
She then read out part of the speech by King George Vl as broadcast to the nation on VE Day1945.
Cllr Lewis said: “Our beacon was one of one of 200 beacons specially commissioned for VE Day.
“It was a spectacular sight from the top of the church tower and I’m delighted that Winsford was selected to join in the national commemoration of this historic event.”
