A RARE tomato is set to go on sale at Winsford’s Over allotments will annual pop-up plant shop.

More than 1,000 plants will be on sale at the plant shop, which is run by plot-holders from the town’s Over Allotments.

A particular highlight is a rare American heritage tomato called Mortgage Lifter, which first grown in the 1930s.

“We’ve been raising the plants since January, including many varieties you won’t find in garden centres,” said John Malam, chair of Over Allotments Association.

“One of our growers is bringing a rare American heritage tomato called Mortgage Lifter.

“It was first grown in the 1930s, and proved so popular it paid off the mortgage of the grower who raised it.

“Another unusual tomato variety we’ll have is Heinz 1370.

“Heinz squashed their way through 1,369 different varieties before they finally found the one suitable to make their famous ketchup with."

As well as vegetable plants, the team from Over Allotments will also have a big selection of bedding plants on offer, to bring colour to gardens and hanging baskets all summer long.

The sale takes place on Saturday May 16, at Winsford Cross Shopping Centre, in the main square near Boots.
