A VACANT school should be reopened to ease pressure on Winsford’s primary schools, a councillor has said.

Winsford Town Councillor, Charlie Parkinson has called for Handley Hill Primary School – which was closed in 2009 – to be reopened to stop parents taking their children to schools outside of Winsford.

Cllr Parkinson said he had been contacted by a number of concerned parents who claimed they were struggling to find an infant or primary school place for their children.

“The primary schools in Winsford are bursting at the seams. Something needs to be done,” Cllr Parkinson said. “It takes years to plan a school, but we have one right there, ready to be used.

“What we don’t want is parents taking their children to school outside of Winsford. That’s what’s happening now, it’s not right. Once they go, it’s hard to get them back.

“I think Cheshire West should take it out of the Neighbourhood Plan and look into how they can reopen it.”

However the chances of Handley Hill Primary School reopening are extremely slim.

A CWAC spokesman said: “We expect the site to be brought forward for housing developments later in 2015.”
