WINSFORD Town Mayor topped off a special year with a charity trek to the summit of Mount Snowdon.

Gina Lewis, Winsford Town Mayor, and a small group led by Reverend George Crowder of St John's Church Over conquered the highest mountain in Wales, which sits 3,560 above sea level.

Mayor Lewis, who has just turned 71, was also joined by Winsford Town Clerk, Alan Warburton, for the charity trek, which was in aid of The NeuroMuscular Centre and Christians Against Poverty.

Mayor Lewis said: “It was the first time I have ever been up Snowdon. We managed to go up under three hours. I was very pleased with that. It was quite an achievement.

“By the time we got to the top it was absolutely freezing. The sky cleared up though and we actually got some sunshine. There were some absolutely marvellous views at the top of the mountain.

“We thoroughly enjoyed it.”

In the weeks leading up the trek, Mayor Lewis took part in several hill climbs and walks, including the first ever Walkabout Winsford, to help prepare her for Snowdon.

“I was very, very stiff the next day,” she said. “I was wishing I had bought a bungalow and not a house, having to go up and down the stairs was quite challenging.

“I wanted to do it before my birthday. It finished off my 70th year.

“The trip couldn’t really have happened without the help of George Crowder, Alan Warburton and Alan McLaren and Isaac McLaren from St John's Church. Their support was magnificent.”

Mr Warburton revealed he has now ticked the trek off his bucket list.

He said: “It's the first time I've climbed a mountain in my life and I loved every minute of it.

“Our guide, George Crowder, the Vicar of St John's, asked me afterwards if I fancied going rock-climbing, but I think I'll quit while I'm ahead.”
