ST Luke’s Cheshire Hospice has launched an appeal for people to donate £10 to help expand the medical and nursing support.

St Luke’s Hospice cares for people from mid and south Cheshire suffering from cancer and other life threatening illnesses, and has been running for 26 years.

To enable St Luke’s to expand the medical and nursing support, Dr Kate Smith, St Luke’s Hospice medical director, has launched an appeal, asking if people would donate £10.

Dr Smith said: “I am strongly aware of how much more we could do, and will need to do in the near future.

“As more people live with long-term conditions due to advances in medical treatment and people’s expectations of medical treatment increase, we need to be careful to remember all those involved patients’ care – not just the nurses and doctors but also the carers and relatives looking after patients at home.

“That’s why we are working hard to extend our care to the many people in your local community.”

St Luke’s Hospice is a non-profit making organisation, though it relies heavily on donations and fundraising. The hospice costs £7,500 a day to stay open and helps 3,000 people every year.

St Luke’s provides treatment, care, advice and support to many seriously ill people and their families every year.

Dr Smith added: “I spend much of my time at the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit, and every day I see the impact the public’s support has on local people who have life limiting illnesses and are approaching death.

“It is so satisfying to see relatives breathe sighs of relief, knowing that they can trust us to look after their loved ones.

“It is a privilege to be allowed into someone’s life at such a difficult time, and to be so trusted by them is an honour.”
