WINSFORD Town Council will push for a reduced 20mph speed limit on the Wharton estate following safety concerns from Wharton Primary School’s teachers and students.

Year 6 pupils from the school spoke at Winsford’s Town Council’s full council meeting to highlight the dangers of walking to and from the school, particularly on Greville Drive and Station Road.

The council agreed to write to Cheshire West and Chester Council to request reducing the speed limit to 20mph across the estate, as well as looking into the possibility of introducing other speed reducing options.

Bayley Burke, 11 said: “Greville Drive would benefit from a 20mph limit and we feel that if we had a lollipop lady or pedestrian crossing, either on Greville Drive and Station Road, it would an enormous difference to many of our children who walk to school.”

The school is currently working with local PCSOs to monitor speed in the area.

Teacher Karen Williams said many children are forced to cross a busy T-junction on Station Road on a daily basis.

She said: “At 3.15, it’s a real hazard because lots of the parents park there and drop them off for the little footpath.

“The approach of the school, although we’re set back the children still have issues coming to the school, they have to cross several roads.

“They’re allowed to come on scooters and bikes, we want to encourage their independence, but there are some real hazards.”

Cllr Brian Clarke lent his support to the school and said he will take the issue up with CWAC – with the backing of the Town Council – along with fellow CWAC councillor, Cllr Pam Booher.

He said he will also speak to the Highways Agency to discuss the possibility of introducing a zebra crossing.

Cllr Clarke said: “My grandson actually goes to the school in the morning and I’ve experienced what it’s like there.

“We did get the extra double yellow lines to stop people from parking so they could get a clear view when crossing the road but because it’s an A road you can still do 30mph.

“And that’s way too much.”
